2. Mighty Measures

What in the world is a farad or a sievert? -Ehren E

Both the farad and sievert are SI units of measurement. We'll visit them in Physics 2 when we talk about a electrical energy and radiation.

A farad measures capacitance, or the ability to store a charge, in electronics. For example, you would use farads to measure the energy in a photoflash capacitor, which makes the light needed for a camera’s flash photography.

A sievert is related to radiation. When you get a test like an x-ray done, your body absorbs some radiation. The sievert is used to represent the health effects of the amount of absorbed radiation. This is called the effective dose. It allows experts to set limits on the amount of radiation, using sieverts as its unit, that a person can be exposed to at a time.

Who chose all the names for the SI-system? -alexi

The names were chosen by multiple scientists over time. Many of the names were inherited from the metric system which got most of its prefixes from latin and greek words proposed as early as 1670 by Gabriel Mouton. The SI-system itself was proposed in 1960 and officially adopted by 17 countries in 1975 in The International Treaty of Meter. New prefixes were added as recently as 2022.
